The Wedding

Thursday, December 11 from 5-9pm at <a href="https:" />Avalon Grille</a> As a gesture of our gratitude to you for traveling to Catalina to celebrate us, please join us at the island favorite restaurant Avalon Grille as we welcome you and kick off the wedding weekend! Allow us to wine and dine you as you meet, mix, and mingle with other guests, and Tyler and Kirsten look forward to having time and space to actually talk with each of you in a lower key, slower paced setting before everything kicks into gear. There will be an open bar, snacks. tray passed appetizers, and a buffet station: there will be absolutely enough food for you to easily make a dinner of the offerings, but we are not technically serving a dinner. Avalon Grille is right on the main drag in town, and directly across the street from the famous Green Pleasure Pier. You'll have to pass the restaurant as you make your way from the ferry to most hotels, so if you're arriving on that last 5pm ferry from Long Beach on Thursday, you'll see us! Come on by once you've checked in and changed into your party clothes :)

Wedding Ceremony

Saturday, December 13 at 3:30pm in the <a href="https://www.theavalontheatre.com/gallery" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Avalon Theatre</a> at the Catalina CasinoPlease arrive between 3:00pm-3:15pm to get oriented to the space and to find your seats well before the start of the ceremony. Shuttle service from Tour Plaza (near the main hotels) to the Casino begins at 2:45pm. If this 3:30pm start time feels early, that is because this is a December wedding, which means the sun sets much earlier. Additionally, the Casino and the city of Avalon face east, so we lose light prior to actual sunset time. It is important that everything begins on time so that there will still be some light after the ceremony during cocktail hour. The wedding party will be using the same entry to the theatre as the guests, so if you are late, you will not be permitted to enter the theatre until after the ENTIRE processional is completed. We love you, but we will not have you walking down the aisle with us :)

Saturday, December 13 following cocktail hour, inside the Catalina Casino <a href="https://www.loc.gov/resource/highsm.25435/?r=-0.03,0.085,1.085,0.515,0" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ballroom</a>to include a plated dinner, an open bar, dancing (a Music Dance Experience), and closes with a grand send-off at 10:30pm! Additional food offerings will be brought out and available during the dancing portion of the evening at stations, so that you can help yourself to more fuel for your dancing!

Getting to the Island

First step: travel to California by air!

You can fly into any of the following airports:Los Angeles - LAXLong Beach - LGBSanta Ana/Orange County - SNA (if you're ambitious, you could probably make BUR work) Once you have landed, you will need to use transportation (Uber, car service, taxi, etc) to get to one of the Catalina Express ferry terminal locations.LAX &amp; LGB are the best/closest airports to use for ferrying out of the Long Beach terminal.SNA is the best airport to use for ferrying out of Dana Point, but SNA is a bit of a hike to the Long Beach terminal. We recommend choosing flights that arrive midday (no later than 2pm) if you plan to ferry over to Catalina on the same day that you fly into California, so that you do not miss the last ferry's departure (which typically happens between 3-5:30pm).

Second step: arrive on the island by sea!

The Catalina Express Ferry

Since the wedding takes place on Santa Catalina Island, which is indeed an island, you will need to take a <a href="https://catalinaexpress.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">boat</a> to get there. The ride is usually very smooth and only takes 1 hour to 1 hour &amp; 15 minutes (depending on which departure port you use) to get from the mainland to Avalon. If you are prone to sea sickness, please be sure to plan accordingly in case of foul weather or choppy seas! Being on the ferry is very similar to air travel, in that there is seating, climate-controlled areas, bathrooms, and a snack/drink bar, but you have WAY more room to move with wider aisles and higher ceilings. Once you are on the island, you will not need to go on another boat until you depart back home.

There are 3 main departure ports you can choose from:<a href="https://catalinaexpress.com/long-beach-port/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long Beach</a> : the Express's main hub, they will have more availability on trips (usually 4+ in each direction per day) and hours earlier in the morning and later at night to get to and from&nbsp;Avalon; has a large terminal with plenty of seating and indoor bathrooms <a href="https://catalinaexpress.com/san-pedro-port/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">San Pedro</a> : typically only runs 2 trips in each direction per day<a href="https://catalinaexpress.com/port-dana-point/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dana Point</a> : located in Orange County, this is the southern-most port but it is the most limited in terms of trip availability, sometimes only running 1 ferry in each direction per day; does not have a terminal, just an outdoor lining-up spot There is a parking lot/garage at each location for a fee of around $25-$40/day. A cheaper option includes parking at a nearby lot and walking to the Express.﻿When reserving your ferry tickets, MAKE SURE YOU ARE TRAVELING TO AVALON, -NOT- TWO HARBORS! TWO HARBORS WILL TAKE YOU TO A SEPARATE PART OF THE ISLAND THAT IS NOT CLOSE!

No additional transportation needed!

Once you are on Catalina Island, you will not need any additional transportation, since it is small and walkable. If you are staying in Avalon, you will be able to get anywhere you need to go for wedding events in Avalon by simply walking there. We are running a shuttle from Tour Plaza (a central pick-up point in town near the main hotels) to the Casino on the day of the wedding to ease your transport in your wedding finery! Shuttle service to the wedding begins at 2:45pm, so meet at Tour Plaza starting at 2:45pm to be shuttled to the wedding. The shuttle will run continuously until the ceremony starts-- but we need you at the theatre no later than 3:15pm, so please be on a shuttle before then! Return shuttle service (from the Casino to Tour Plaza) will run from 10pm to 11pm, as the wedding reception ends at 10:30pm. Many of the hotels we have listed all provide transportation to and from the ferry terminal with your luggage, though we have definitely walked from the ferry to our hotel with our luggage before, no problem; just note that it can get a little bumpy with your suitcase wheels on the cobblestone roads. There are very few cars on the island at all, though there is a taxi service available if you want to take a taxi somewhere! Golf carts are available to rent for 2 hours at a time if you would like to zip around the rest of the island via golf cart.

Hotel Atwater

Main selling points: This hotel is in the middle of the Metropole Marketplace, a cute little shopping and eating area. The groomsmen will be getting ready and taking photos at the Beach House here on the wedding day! It is also one of the few places in town that has an elevator. Centrally located in the heart of Avalon, and just steps from the beach, Hotel Metropole is the perfect spot for romantic, family and singles getaways: stunning oceanfront VIP suites with fireplaces, jacuzzi baths, and balconies overlook the beach. The rooftop jacuzzi has a breathtaking view of the harbor where you can relax and sip champagne. The Metropole is very reminiscent of European hotels, in that it is spread across multiple buildings above shops on the first floor, and the lobby is on the second floor, so you have to take the stairs or the elevator to check in.

Main selling points: Breakfast every morning on site, transportation to and from the ferry, and golf cart shuttle service up and down the hill to town throughout the day and into the evening. The bridal party will be getting ready in the Penthouse and taking photos here on the wedding day! A historic landmark transformed, the Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel on the hillside above the bay of Avalon was originally built in 1926 by renowned novelist, Zane Grey, as his vacation home. The estate is now transformed into one of the best-selling hotels in Catalina Island. With renovations completed in 2019, enjoy the sweeping views of the island hills and harbor, the incredible history, and modern architecture of the iconic Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel. It is a full service hotel, with complimentary shuttle service and breakfast provided at the hotel.

Please dress to the nines and bring your dancing shoes!For your reference, the groomsmen will be in tuxedos and the brideswomen will be in floor length, dark green gowns.Black tie attire is encouraged, so tuxedos and floor length gowns are welcome! If tuxedos or long dresses are a hardship, don't sweat it; we do not at ALL want this to be stressful for anyone, and your presence with us is the most important thing.If black tie is not in the cards for you, please come wearing formal attire: choose a dark suit (with jacket and tie) or a cocktail dress, as your thoughtful attire will help us create an elegant and celebratory atmosphere that befits the venue and the experience! The wedding takes place in the 1929-built Catalina Casino, with the ceremony in a large theatre with high arched ceilings, Art Deco paintings, and red velvet seats. The aisle is literally a red carpet, how fun! The reception is upstairs in the largest circular ballroom in the world, complete with a full 360 degree terrace around the entire building.The whole place has a very Old Hollywood, Great Gatsby, glamorous vibe and aesthetic to it, and we are leaning into that feel for the wedding! Velvet, satin, and other luxurious fabrics and looks are encouraged, and please feel free to wear sequined or beaded pieces to make the whole place shimmer-- you polish up real nice, and we want to see it!

Kirsten and Mallory met in 2015 at a job where Mallory had to literally be Kirsten's bodyguard. She brings a certain Steven Adams energy to the party, and one time she even made an ex-boyfriend of Kirsten's cry. Kirsten is often found at Memphis Grizzlies basketball games with Mallory, who has season tickets and generously brings Kirsten along as a plus one to games, in exchange for Rendezvous BBQ nachos and Wiseacre beers. As Mallory's love for Kirsten has deepened over the course of their friendship, so has Mallory's love for Taylor Swift, ultimately resulting in Mallory getting tickets to The Eras Tour and attending her first Taylor concert, with Kirsten (and Tyler).

Abby Brittle

SE Bestie to the Bride and Fellow ADHD Nerd Enthusiast to the Groom! Tiffany and Kirsten met at Somatic Experiencing (SE) training in 2023 and basically had an "It Takes Two" moment ("I see me!" "I see me too!"). Kirsten introduced Tiffany to the Co-Star app, they traded information, and their friendship (and Tiffany's new passion for astrology) hit the ground running and never looked back! Tiffany describes their friendship as "healing to our inner children by finding each other late in life...we can have friendship that doesn't require us to mask who we really are." Kirsten and Tyler are Auntie Kirsten and Uncle Ty to Tiffany's daughters, who are also thrilled to have a new orange feline cousin in Neal.

Amanda says she and Kirsten met when they were "co-workers in hell" together.
Amanda is Kirsten's tough love, ultimate straight shooter friend. One time Amanda told Kirsten she needed to go home and put her face in a bowl full of ice cubes and regulate herself pronto instead of sending text messages she would surely regret. When Amanda lived in Memphis, Kirsten spent many nights at Amanda's house, where they would order Chinese food from the restaurant around the corner and watch award shows and SNL together.

Amanda Duncan

Kirsten and Shannon have been friends since they met working at J.Crew in college in 2010. In Shannon's words, "the sparks were instant when we met at Jcrew." Shannon Muehlbauer

Established in 1996, Caroline's middle name is Ashley, which was chosen by five-year-old Kirsten because Ashley was her favorite Olsen twin. In Caroline's words: "Hi, I’m Caroline, the youngest of the three Cannon sisters—also known as the family’s comedic relief and chaos instigator. Kirsten, our fearless eldest, has always paved the way (sometimes dramatically 😉) for the rest of us. I’ve technically known Tyler since I was 11, but like most things from middle school, the details are fuzzy. These days, though, I know him as someone who truly makes Kirsten happy—which is probably the highest compliment I could give."

Caroline Cannon

Established in 1993, Kelsey and Kirsten were constantly mistaken for twins growing up (which probably wasn’t helped by their mom dressing them in matching outfits). If you need a detailed spreadsheet or someone to remind you when it’s time to leave for dinner (with militant intensity)—Kelsey’s your girl. Tyler lovingly nicknamed Kelsey "The Commandant" after the Disneyland trip in August 2023, which Kelsey singlehandedly ran and directed from a wheelchair, since she had a broken foot. Kelsey has always referred to Tyler as "Roche," having known him nearly as long as Kirsten has, since back in their high school days on the Knowledge Bowl team or when Tyler would drive Kelsey to school when Kirsten was sick-- ask either of them for the story about Tyler forgetting to put his car in park.

Established 1995, Jamie spent his childhood years either antagonizing Tyler, or asking him for help, or a combination of the two. For example, at age 3, Jamie received Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy and, decided that he needed to asked Tyler to help him read every time text appeared on the screen, as he could not read. He then proceeded to talk to literally every NPC in the game. 
As they both grew older, their paths diverged for a time, but they have enjoyed reforging and solidifying their brotherly bond, even joining forces for a recent endeavor of selling their old Pokémon card collection.

Jamie Roche

Tyler and David are trauma bonded forever from their time working on their PhDs at Georgia Tech. Even after spending hours in the lab together, they enjoyed meeting up after work to go rock climbing or explore Atlanta's bar scene. David was Kirsten & Tyler's very first houseguest when he spent Thanksgiving 2024 with them in Memphis! In David's words: "Tyler joined the Hud research group at Georgia Tech when I was in my third year. We became fast friends and would talk about our views on the origin of life and grad school in general, on our love lives, and on our aspirations. We've had many fun times in Atlanta, at scientific conferences, and all along the southern border of the United States when we drove across the country together."

David Fialho

A member of the four boys that spent many summers together growing up in LA, Weston has long been a character in Tyler's life. Always the comedian, Weston was always quickest and most effective at roasting Tyler whenever he took himself too seriously. Weston is responsible for Tyler's family-famous nickname "tytykid812", which is only slightly based on one of Tyler's real screen names. When Tyler told Weston in March 2024 that he had moved in with Kirsten in Memphis (after Weston had just seen them at Christmas as friends), Weston replied with "straight to DVD."

Weston Doty

One of the four boys that spent many summers together growing up in LA, Hunter has been Tyler's friend as long as either can remember. He and Tyler shared many great times together, including learning how to sail, card games in Catalina, many hours in the LA summer sun, and even a few raucous evenings during their college years. In Hunter's words: "I’ve known Tyler my whole life and we basically grew up together! Many fond memories of summer pool parties, Disneyland trips, playing video and board games together, etc."

Hunter Doty

Max was one of the first people, if not THE first person, to learn of Tyler's unrequited love for Kirsten beginning in 2007, and he was always willing to have Tyler over to watch the Xbox visualizer while listening to emo about it. Aside from music and shared school subject interests, Tyler and Max bonded over technology, and took up the respective positions in the classic "Mac vs PC" debate. Max teased Tyler for his constant "I have an iPhone" declarations as an early adopter, though he has since come to see the light. In Max's words: "I shadowed Tyler before I started at St George's. And then obviously having most classes together quickly cemented our friendship. Random things: Guitar Hero/RockBand Parties aka FMFO, Senior Year Scavenger Hunt, Warped Tour, Tailgate @ USC and everything else Tyler still remembers since he has photos and texts saved from his OG iPhone!"

Max Gabreski

Max was Tyler's freshman roommate in college, and they've been friends ever since. They've shared many fun times including hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail, car camping in Joshua Tree, and many enjoyable nights of gaming, whether it was in the dorms as freshman or over discord almost two decades later. Max was the one Tyler turned to when Kirsten invited Tyler to come live with her when her roommate moved out in 2014: Max confirmed it would indeed be a bad idea since Kirsten was asking platonically, and Tyler had romantic feelings for Kirsten.

Max Strater

Trent is the husband of Tiffany (brideswoman, see above), which means Tyler and Trent have also bonded as their ladies became such fast friends. The four of them did a Disney World trip together (plus Trent and Tiffany's 3 daughters) in the fall of 2024, and while Kirsten and Tiffany were "Disney walking" their way through the parks, Tyler and Trent found themselves with time and space to chat about life, science, and medicine. Tyler and Trent now have matching Disney collared shirts that they bought on that trip. Trent is an excellent father and Tyler feels lucky to get to learn by observation. Kirsten and Trent share an oft-used catchphrase in "let's blow this popsicle stand!" so it will surely be uttered over the wedding weekend.

This 2-hour, 4-wheeling adventure offers you an excellent opportunity to see American Bison in the wild as you journey through favorite grazing grounds of these majestic animals, which were named the national mammal of the United States in 2016.While you keep your eyes peeled for Bison grazing on the hillsides, your guide will share interesting facts about Catalina's history, flora and fauna as you journey through historic Middle Ranch and up rugged Cape Canyon to a scenic overlook on Black Jack Mountain. Then it’s down the original 19th-century stagecoach route, which offers sweeping views of the majestic Catalina coast and beautiful blue Pacific all the way back to Avalon.

This unique 18-hole course has been a much-loved fixture on the island for nearly 50 years! Known in mini-golf circles as one of the world’s most beautiful and challenging courses, Golf Gardens’ classic styling and award-winning layout make for an unforgettable experience that's sure to be a highlight of your stay on Catalina Island. Par is 51, and the official course record is 41. Allow approximately one hour for play.

Luau Larry’s is an institution on Catalina Island. Located in the beautiful city of Avalon, just steps from the beach, Luau’s offers views of the harbor in a lively, fun tropical setting. Check out Luau Larry's for some of the local favorite concoctions including Buffalo Milks and Wiki Wackers and listen to some of the Island’s best entertainment! It's a bit of a dive bar, and it can be loud with the live music, but it's a quintessential Catalina experience to stop in at least once!

Bluewater Grill is a must-see favorite in Avalon, located on the historic site of the SS Catalina Ferry dock with stunning waterfront views of the beach, harbor and casino. This would be an excellent place to have lunch or dinner on Friday 12/12, or to go for a final lunch on the island on your departure day, which Kirsten and Tyler have been known to do. Kirsten recommends the crab cakes and the cucumber mojito!
